With the passing of time, the pursuit to appear as young as possible becomes more and more important to the majority of us.

Technology has created many new and innovative procedures to accomplish this, and one of the more ingenious methods is laser skin resurfacing. This process is very effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing out uneven skin, and reducing acne scars or other blemishes.

The treatment will reveal new skin under the treated area, and a patient’s overall complexion will be more even and firm after recovery. Additionally, heat generated by the laser has been known to help stimulate new collagen growth in the skin beneath. It is widely known that collagen is an important element to maintain in the skin for people seeking a more youthful appearance.

Laser Skin Resurfacing – what is the process like?

It’s a fairly straightforward treatment. The practitioner uses a laser to send very short and direct pulses of light at pre-targeted areas of the skin. This removes irregularities in the skin, and reveals the fresher, cleaner looking layers underneath. A local anesthetic will be used on the areas of the face to be treated, and for more thorough treatments, a general anesthetic could be used along with sedation. The procedure can be as quick as 30 minutes or up to 2 hours if the entire face is being treated.

Laser Options

CO2 laser resurfacing is generally used for issues such as wrinkles, scarring, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and warts. The most modern type of laser used for this purpose is called ultrapulse, and it utilizes extremely short light pulses to remove the uppermost layers of targeted skin areas. For some conditions, a continuous light beam is used to remove layers of skin.

Erbium laser resurfacing is used on many different body parts, including the face, neck, chest, and hands. This process is effective at removing shallow and deeper wrinkles and lines. For those with more pigmentation in their skin, this is generally the best type of laser treatment.

During the initial consultation with the doctor, your skin condition will be examined and then the doctor will use several factors to decide on the right treatment, including your medical history and current state of health. Depending on these factors and the skin type and particular issues that the patient is experiencing, the appropriate type of laser treatment will be chosen.

Recovery Time for Laser Resurfacing

CO2 treatment can take up to 2 weeks to heal, and erbium can be healed in as fast as a week. The doctor will give you a very specific skin care routine following the procedure. This must be followed carefully by the patient, as the healing stage is critical when it comes to the effectiveness of laser skin resurfacing.

An Effective Solution for Problem Areas

Laser skin resurfacing has been shown to be highly effective in removing surface level skin blemishes, as well as moderately deep wrinkles and lines, scarring, and a host of other conditions. If you have any issues with facial skin, see your doctor or dermatologist to determine what treatment type would be best for your particular condition.
